The UN General Assembly adopted its 71st resolution condemning human rights violations by the Iranian regime, with 80 votes in favour and 27 against.
The resolution condemns the illegal use of the death penalty, arbitrary detentions, torture, repression of protests and discrimination against women, minorities and minors. It calls for an immediate halt to executions, many of them based on forced confessions, and urges the suspension of all death sentences.
It also highlights the appalling conditions in Iranian prisons, including the denial of medical care and contact with families, and condemns sexual and gender-based violence against detainees.
The resolution emphasises the regime’s severe repression of women and girls, which violates international human rights standards.
Maryam Rajavi, president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), welcomed the resolution, calling it a small reflection of the regime’s wider crimes.
She noted the regime’s use of executions and brutal repression to suppress protests, citing the recent death sentences of political prisoners and the more than 625 executions since the new president took office.
Ms. Rajavi stressed the urgency of referring the regime’s crimes to the UN Security Council, demanding justice for Iran’s leaders for decades of human rights violations.
