British Committee for Iran Freedom Urges Action to Save Six Political Prisoners in Iran

The British Committee for Iran Freedom (BCFIF) has issued an urgent appeal for immediate international intervention to save the lives of six political prisoners sentenced to death by Iran’s judiciary. The prisoners, accused of membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), were reportedly subjected to months of torture and denied due process.

The six individuals, whose charges include “conspiracy to undermine national security,” “rebellion against the state,” and “forming a group to disrupt national stability,” face execution under accusations widely condemned as politically motivated. Among them are:

  • Pouya Ghobadi (32): An electrical engineer, arrested in March 2024.
  • Vahid Bani-Amrian (32): A management graduate, arrested in January 2024.
  • Babak Alipour (33): A law graduate, arrested in January 2024.
  • Ali Akbar Daneshvarkar (57): A civil engineer, arrested in January 2024.
  • Mohammad Taghavi (58): A former political prisoner from the 1980s and 1990s, previously detained in 2020 and sentenced to three years on similar charges.
  • Abolhassan Montazer (65): An architect and activist suffering from severe health conditions, detained in January 2024 and denied adequate medical care.

BCFIF described these sentences as emblematic of Iran’s continued crackdown on political dissent. “Under the leadership of Ali Khamenei, the Iranian regime has escalated its repression, resorting to executions of activists in a desperate bid to stifle resistance,” the statement noted while praising the resilience of Iran’s youth in their struggle for justice, freedom, and democracy.

The committee emphasized the urgency of global solidarity, urging world leaders and international institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the European Union, to take decisive action. “The international community has a moral obligation to stand with the people of Iran and demand an end to the regime’s systemic violations of human rights,” the statement declared.

BCFIF called for immediate measures to halt the executions and secure the release of all political prisoners in Iran, warning that the survival of these six individuals hinges on swift and coordinated action by the international community. The organization reiterated that global attention and intervention are critical to addressing the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran.
